A 92-Year-Old Terminally Ill Man Walked Free
Imagine being 92 years old, your body failing you, suffering from severe health issues, weak, and confined to a prison's terminally ill ward, a very gloomy place to be. That was Mr. Wanga's reality. He had spent years behind bars, his health deteriorating with each passing day. He was weak and every day was a battle just to survive. He was placed in the terminally ill ward, a place where hope often fades. His eyes spoke of years of pain and a quiet surrender of hope.
Then, during a routine visit, our Justice Nest paralegals walked into that ward and found him. He was lying frail and trembling on a thin mattress. His body was failing him, and his spirit was almost broken. In that moment, our team saw a man who was someone's grandfather, someone's father, someone's brother, an everyday relative and a human being who deserved dignity. They saw a man who deserved a second chance to receive care from his loved ones.
Through our Prison Paralegal Program, Bridging the Justice Gap, our paralegal Joseph held Mr. Wanga's trembling hands and promised to fight for him. He drafted a revision application based on medical grounds while our Documentation Office compiled his medical reports, chronicling every ache and silent cry. We filed it under a certificate of urgency at the Mombasa High Court, praying and hoping. The court granted him a 3-year probation, ruling that this terminally ill 92-year-old man deserved a chance to live in dignity, receiving medical care, surrounded by loved ones.
You made this possible and now Mr. Wanga walked out of those prison gates, you believed in restorative justice, and he is now feeling the sun on his face, finally able to breathe. He is receiving the medical care he desperately needs. Your support has also made it possible for us to reunite 285+ children with their mothers through our Children and Mothers Diversion Program, Mending the Nest, and release 651+ inmates through our Prison Paralegal Program. Mr. Wanga, a man who was given a second chance walks free.
