A Second Chance at 20: PL's Story
At just 20 years old, PL found herself behind prison walls. She had left home to work as a househelp, hoping to earn an honest living. But her employer refused to pay her wages. Months passed. The frustration and desperation grew.
In a moment of poor judgment, PL took KES. 50,000 (USD 390) from her employer. She was arrested and charged with stealing. When she appeared in court, she pleaded not guilty. The court granted her bail of KES. 80,000 (USD 620), but PL had no savings, no stable income, and no family to help. The bail might as well have been a prison sentence itself. Unable to secure her freedom, she was remanded back to prison. For a young woman barely beginning her adult life, the experience was overwhelming. Fear, uncertainty, and regret filled her days. The prison walls seemed to close in around her dreams.
It was during this difficult period that she met our prison paralegals at Justice Nest. They listened to her story without judgment. They helped her understand her legal options. They guided her through a process that offered something she had almost lost- hope. The paralegals encouraged an alternative path: Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Dialogue was opened between PL and the complainant. Through the mediation, PL managed to raise KES. 20,000 (USD 155)as part of the settlement. The complainant agreed to withdraw the case.
For PL, it was more than a legal victory. It was a second chance. She walked away with a renewed sense of purpose and the chance to rebuild her life. As she left prison, she exclaimed, "Asanteni sana" (Thank you very much).
But PL's story is not unique. Thousands of women across Kenya find themselves trapped in the justice system, not because they are criminals, but because poverty and desperation led them to a moment of poor judgment. Many are single mothers. Many have children left behind. Many never get a second chance. At Justice Nest, we believe that justice should restore, restore the community, restore families. Through our prison paralegal program, we help people understand their legal options and find alternatives to incarceration. Through ADR, we bring together complainants and offenders to find solutions based on understanding and restoration.
